The 2016 Nobel Prize winners have been named over the last few days, culminating in Thursday morning's big reveal that legendary singer Bob Dylan has been awarded the honor in literature. But while the majority of internet was freaking out about that, others expressed their disappointment with the selections—not because the winners weren't accomplished enough, but because out of the 11 winners in the fields of medicine, chemistry, physics, economics, peace and literature, no women at all were recognized for their contributions. P.S.: it's 2016, people.
In fact, since 1901, only 48 women have ever won a Nobel Prize. To put that in perspective, 881 individuals in total have received the prestigious award since 1901. So basically, this doesn't look good, and really, how indicative of the world's greatest achievements can the prize really be if there's such a wide gap in the diversity of its recipients?
Following the announcement of this year's winners, some took to Twitter to tell the world just how uncool this lack of women Nobel Prize laureates is:
For such a smart organization, this exclusion of women is, well, a pretty dumb move.
