Less than 100 years after the 19th Amendment was ratified, giving women the right to vote, Donald Trump supporters are calling to repeal it to help the GOP candidate secure a victory against Hillary Clinton in the presidential election.
The Twitter hashtag began brewing after FiveThirtyEight's editor-in-chief Nate Silver tweeted charts on Tuesday night showing how his blog predicts voting would break down come Nov. 8. Unsurprisingly, if only men voted, Trump's numbers and chance of winning would be much higher than if women also hit the polls—350 to 188 electoral votes.
While the statistics are upsetting on their own—men apparently aren't standing up for women's rights as much as they should be—some Trump supporters interpreted the data to mean women should no longer be given the right to vote, tweeting with the hashtag #RepealThe19th on Wednesday.
Ladies and gentlemen, we've entered the year 1920 again.
See some of the offensive, shocking and revealing tweets (several sent by women), below:
The hashtag comes just days after audio footage of Donald Trump making lewd and reprehensible remarks about women was leaked as well as a New York Times report that Trump has previously sexually assaulted two women.
But, like any great abhorrent concept, the hashtag was quickly hijacked and used to send messages of support about feminism and show outrage against Trump supporters and their suggestions.
