All election season long, Donald Trump has made creating jobs in America—instead of China and other foreign countries—his focus. Never mind the fact that his own clothing brand is actually manufactured abroad. Now, a damaging new report by Racked suggests that the conditions at the Chinese factory producing shoes manufactured under Ivanka Trump's label has borderline sweatshop conditions.
At the factory, which also produces products by Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, and DKNY, workers were reportedly subjected to alarmingly long days that frequently lasted from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. with two mere one-hour breaks and only two days of rest a month, as a deep dive done by Racked concludes. “We got to sleep for six hours,” a former employee told Racked. “If we worked until after three in the morning, we could start the next day at 9:15.” “It’s a garbage factory,” another worker told Racked, who apparently often worked until 11 p.m. or midnight.
Even worse, workers' wages were allegedly often kept from them as a kind of "deposit" so they would continue working until paid. One worker revealed that he had worked long shifts for all of July without taking a single day off but hadn't received payment by mid-August when he spoke to Racked. Apparently, the factory has withheld worker's paychecks for up to eight weeks.
To be fair to Ms. Trump, it's very possible that she herself isn't even aware of the conditions at the factory, since her shoes are produced through a licensing agreement with Marc Fisher. Neither she nor Marc Fisher have yet commented on the new report.
