Kelly Clarkson did something that—for some reason—surprised many people: She waited until her 30s to get married. Madness, I know!
Yes, Clarkson said, "I do" to her current boo, Brandon Blackstock, at the ripe-old age of 31, which is basically 75 for some. As someone who hails from South Carolina, I'm well aware of the pressure many women in the deep South face to get married in their 20s. So, I'm not surprised by the reaction people had to Clarkson's lack of wedding band at 27. But maybe you'll be: "Everyone thought I was gay ’cause I wasn’t married with kids already," the "Piece by Piece" singer revealed at a Good Housekeeping luncheon this week. Because when a woman isn't married, there has to be a reason, right?
Actually, no.
If you choose to get married at a later age, you haven't "failed." Sometimes, women just don't want to get married. Period. That doesn't mean they have to be lesbians or nuns or witches to reject archaic social expectations. If they don't want to get married and begin the nuclear family at 29, that is 100 percent their prerogative.
Kelly Clarkson did eventually get married, but she waited until she was emotionally ready.
“I think the biggest thing is just getting married later in life…You change so much in your 20s,” she said. “I mean, [my husband] got married at 21 in his first marriage, and they both went, ‘What?’ It can be very hard to grow in the same way. Your 20s are all about growth and giant [mistakes].”
Now, this doesn't mean that you can't be ready for marriage in your 20s. Everyone's timeline is different. But it's important to respect people's choices. Marriage and babies are huge steps in life. It's important that you do them on your own terms. And if you want to skip those steps entirely? Do that on your own terms, too.
