"Black Sails" star Toby Stephens recently sat down to discuss what is in store for his character Captain Flint in the upcoming third season of STARZ's hit television show.
Stephens warned Den of Geek that Captain Flint is going to have a long emotional journey where he is forced to regain his humanity again.
"Flint's in a different place. He's much more contained and the story of season three is that he's cut himself off from humanity because he doesn't have anyone to anchor him," the actor explained. "It's his journey to find his purpose, and through that purpose, his lost humanity."
The "Black Sails" star added that while Flint is trying to work through his anger, he is going to have an interesting meeting with the infamous pirate Edward "Blackbeard" Teach.
"You know it is not going to go too well because their egos are too big," Stephens said. "It doesn't go too well, but it's not like explosives. It's much more of a slow burn. What ends up happening is very good."
Stephens went on to point out that Captain Flint's uneasy alliance with the pirate Vane will be in jeopardy thanks to the return of Blackbeard.
"The journey they go on is a fun one," he explained. "They're never going to be buddies but they do find as time goes on that they respect one another and they find common ground in order to work together. However, Vane is initially drawn back to his former partner Blackbeard because they used to work together in the past. Then Vane realizes Blackbeard's way of doing things isn't something he agrees with anymore."
Stephens' "Black Sails" co-star Ray Stevenson, who will play Blackbeard in season three, also sat down with Inverse to discuss the challenges of bringing an infamous pirate to life.
Stevenson admitted that he made sure to watch the first two seasons of "Black Sails" so he would be knowledgeable about the previous storylines.
"I find it almost impossible to watch any form of TV because I'm bouncing around," he said. "But thankfully they made it all available to me so I was able to watch the first two seasons before I donned the tri-corner hat."
The "Black Sails" star then went on to talk about how his interpretation of Blackbeard straddled the line between pure menace and surprising sophistication.
"I don't believe there's a thin line between Blackbeard's menace and sophistication," Stevenson explained. "I don't think anybody makes a qualified judgment of who they are going to be sophisticated or menacing to. It all depends on the interpretation and the character with which you're engaged."
The "Black Sails" season three premiere will air on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 9 p.m. on STARZ.
