Happy national sweatpants day! While we love a comfy pant built for nothing more than lounging, today feels like the most appropriate time to jump to the defense of the occasionally maligned sweat. While certain cuts and materials aren't meant for much more than lazy weekend mornings (and other styles on the list of items from our collegiate past that we'd never wear again), there are more modern cuts and fits that can look surprisingly like proper trousers. When you find the perfect pair and style them just so, they can pass muster at most offices too.
What are the secrets?
Look for a slim cut. Traditional sweatpants are baggy and far from flattering, while too-skinny varieties are basically leggings. The perfect fit will remind you of straight-leg denim, not clinging to your legs or drowning your frame.

Keep them short. The cuffed ankles that are a sweatpant signature also help make them more office-friendly. The tight opening should sit right above your ankle bone, mimicking the same look of the cropped pants that are chic office staples.
Style them with classics. When it comes to making sweats work at the office, what you wear them with is just as important as the pair itself. Dress them up with classic pumps or a pointy-toe flat, and keep your blouse basic but sharp. A tee might work at a relaxed office, but it's better to avoid any possibility of the look reading as sloppy. Look for a boxy top in a heavy fabric or a timeless button-down.
Keep the color basic. Basically, shop for shades that you'd have professional-looking pants in (black, navy, and a deep charcoal gray top the list). Brights or graphics betray the style as being too off-duty, while lighter hues can broadcast the more casual fabrication.
The only thing we might love more than sweatpants? Leggings. Brush up on the new rulebook for wearing them outside the gym.
