Jackie O, Katharine Hepburn, and More Style Icons Show Us the Dos and Don'ts of Wearing Wide Leg Pants

One of our favorite trends to come out of the spring collections this year is the wide-leg trouser. It's tailored, classic, but boasts a silhouette that turns heads all the same. Whether high-waisted or low-slung, this trouser trend is perfect for the office (with a button-down) or date night (with a silk camisole).

Classic and simple as this trouser trend may be, the oversized shape may seem a bit daunting to style. This is certainly a trend we remember from decades past, though it may have gone into hibernation as we embraced skinny jeans and slim pixie pants in recent years, so who better to look to for styling dos and don'ts than some of our ultimate style icons.

From Kathatine Hepburn to Jackie O, we can't help but be inspired by their perfectly tailored style and are certainly taking a page or two out of their books when it comes to wearing wide-leg pants this season. Scroll through the original it girls below:

Do: Opt for a cropped style for a night out.

Pair fluid ankle-length trousers with a silk camisole and cropped jacket or blazer, like Lauren Hutton. Finish your date night look off with a pair of strappy heels or sandals. Get the look with these Banana Republic pants.
Don't: pair wide-leg culottes with an oversized top. It's important to balance the proportions of this oversized trouser when reaching for a shorter style.

Do: Reach for a high-waisted style.

Don't: leave your top loose when opting for a high-waisted style. Show off your waistline and minimize excess bulk with this elegant silhouette.

Do: Update your suiting.

Don't: opt for bold colors, though there is a time and place for bright suiting. Reach for neutrals like black, navy, or even white. Stick to one eye-catching trend at a time!

Do: Extend your silhouette with a long-line jacket.

Don't: go too oversized. It's important to remember that longer lines doesn't necessarily mean slouchy or boxy!

Do: Try white.

Looser shapes, like wide-leg trousers, are a great way to master wearing white, especially during wintertime, like chic Jackie O. Whether you pair them with a simple T-shirt or layer on a chunky knit, the cold-weather friendly trouser style turns the summery hue into a winter favorite. Go white with a pair from St. Roche.
