People are so used to seeing Emily Blunt all dolled up on the red carpet and in her movies that to see her portraying a desperate alcoholic in "The Girl On the Train" would come as a visual shock.
During an interview with the Evening Standard, Blunt said that she looks so frightening on the set that even her own daughter, Hazel, is terrified of her on-screen persona Rachel Watson.
"I'm now playing the worst looking alcoholic in the world so it's fun," she said. "Trust me - I can show you a picture. I think I frighten my own child! It's that bad!"
Blunt stars in the film adaptation of Paula Hawkins' novel together with Luke Evans, Justin Theroux and Rebecca Ferguson. Hawkins is actually very pleased with Blunt's transformation because it means she will deliver a compelling performance as Rachel.
"They actually made Emily Blunt look like a woman who lets herself get into a complete mess," noted the author.
However, imbibing Rachel's personal dilemma took its toll on Blunt. According to the actress, it was the first time she was unable to shake off her character even after the cameras stopped rolling.
"I went home and I couldn't sleep for two or three days in a row and it was odd," she recalled. "I've never had that experience as an actor before. I've usually managed to have a pretty good detachment from work."
Earlier, Blunt told Deadline that she accepted the role of Rachel because she wanted to portray a "damaged" woman for a change.
"I just love that it's about addiction and loneliness and voyeurism and what we think we see and don't see. I think it's very relatable," she explained. "We've all ridden the train to work and wondered about the lives of the people on the train, and I think that people relate to that. I love that your heroine, your lead character is the most unreliable witness in the world because she's a drunk."
"The Girl On the Train" will be released on October 7.
