When Disney Channel announced its reboot of the wildly popular "High School Musical" franchise by announcing casting for "High School Musical: 4," fans hoped for a reunion of some of the original East High Wildcats, including Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

But it looks as if their hopes are dashed, as rumor has it that Efron refuses to ever work with Vanessa Hudgens again after their relationship went sour after four years together as a couple.

Insiders claim that the former duo has too much history and cannot be in the same room together, according to Inquisitr.

Several months ago, the core cast of the original film series, including Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel came together to celebrate the film's 10th anniversary.

Fans were disappointed when Efron was not able to make the special as he was promoting his latest film, "Dirty Grandpa." He instead sent a video message to fans, which was played during the special.

Inquisitr reported that Efron was attempting to avoid contact with Hudgens by not showing up for the reunion.

The two reportedly broke up on poor terms in 2010.

Efron also no longer wants to be linked with the franchise that made him a superstar.

In a 2009 interview with Nylon Guys magazine, the actor remarked of his time with the three-film series, "I try not to look at all of it. You can't enjoy or celebrate it; it's not a real thing. The face on the lunchbox and s***, you can't share that with your friends."

Despite Efron's distance from the project, Disney is hoping to score big with the fourth installment of the film franchise.

"High School Musical is part of Disney Channel's DNA. It embodies all that we stand for. As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we're excited to announce 'the start of something new' - as we launch a search for a new class of East High Wildcats to star in a fourth installment of the High School Musical franchise," said Disney Channel's Worldwide president Gary Marsh.

The film is set to debut on Disney Channel as early as the end of 2016.
