Hollywood is obsessed with being skinny, and this is why many actresses feel the need to subject themselves to crazy diets, medical weight loss treatments and high-intensity workouts.
Laura Prepon, who stars as Alex Vause in the Netflix series "Orange is the New Black," is one of these actresses.
Her struggle with her weight actually started when she was just a child living in Europe.
"When I came back from Europe I really started developing all of these kind of autoimmune things," she shared with The Hollywood Social Lounge. "I developed this thing called Hashimoto syndrome, celiac's disease, I was highly allergic to dairy and wheat. I would have an adverse effect to it. I was always inflamed, I had no energy I wasn't assimilating nutrients, I was always hungry. And I went on this constant, basically 15-year journey."
To overcome her condition, Prepon talked to different doctors over the years, who gave her all sorts of pills and supplements. Her recovery was especially difficult because she was already in the public eye.
"So I would have this pressure of being on camera and I had the best job in the world and I'm literally living my dream and I was stressed out every day about my weight and I would go to different fittings and leave in tears because the stylist is like 'you don't fit into these clothes, this is what we have, I don't know really know what to do, you need to lose weight.' I would literally leave crying," said Prepon.
"At a young age I was told I had to lose 30 pounds, and this is like a pressure in our industry," she added.
Thankfully, Prepon has found a safe haven now in Jenji Kohan's show "Orange is the New Black," which proudly showcases women of different races, sizes and sexual orientation.
Prepon's character Vause has a love/hate relationship with fellow inmate Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling).
When E! News asked if the two will get their happy ending or not, Prepon said it's possible.
"The Alex and Piper relationship is so awesome. It's so tumultuous...they love each other a lot. It's this crazy relationship, there's never a dull moment," she said. "I don't know if two people like that could ever ride off into the sunset, but we'll see what happens in season four. There's no shortage of stories to tell."
"Orange is the New Black" season 4 will be released on Friday, June 17.
