There may be some serious changes come to Fox's "Empire." Should the hip hop series be renewed for a third season, one of the Lyon boys may not be returning with it if he has his way.
According to Page Six, "Empire" star Trai Byers, who plays the role of Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard)'s oldest son Andre Lyon, is allegedly ready to quit the show. This comes after a source revealed Byers had a huge meltdown on set recently that totally backfired.
"Trai threw a temper tantrum during filming in the past few weeks, saying, 'I don't get to do enough, I might leave.' But producers called his bluff and said, 'Fine, if you're not happy, we don't need you.' He thinks he is a brilliant guy who deserves a better role, but he's hardly one of the most popular or dynamic actors on the show," the insider revealed.
The source went on to reveal that Byers, who is engaged to cast mate Grace Gealey, doesn't think his character has an "important" enough role and that "he thinks he has the acting chops of Taraji and Terrence."
"He doesn't get how the show benefits him, and he feels he has way too much talent when he's not the star by any means," the source continued. "He feels that he studied at Yale and he's a 'true thespian' . . . The character is beneath him. He has an idea of himself as being this big Shakespearean actor."
Apparently "Empire" isn't the only big thing sources say Byers want out of, because he allegedly fired "all of his reps for not getting him big movie roles" too.
Another insider claimed that Byers was up for a big role in a new movie based on Muhammad Ali.
"In his mind he was very close to getting it," the source said. "He fired [his team] when he didn't, and now no one knows how to reach out to him. He's even fired ICM."
However, sources close to the "Empire" team later dismissed the rumors.
"It's the last week of filming the season, and he's not quitting, nor is he being fired for now," the source said.
Byers nor Fox have responded to the rumors.
