"Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo has opened up about working on the show without a leading man. Patrick Dempsey, who played her character's husband Derek Shepherd, left the show last year after 11 seasons.
"It's amazing how much you get done without a p*****," the actress joked during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "We miss him dearly, but yeah, the show is doing very well."
Pompeo also said that she understands fans about getting upset over the character's exit but maintained that such a change contributes to the show's progress.
"People tune in to see, what does the show look like now?" she said. "What is Meredith going to do without Derek? They get so upset about the change, but change is precisely what everyone always needs to sort of get to the next place."

Pompeo also admitted that Dempsey's exit has brought positive things to her in terms of how she views her work.
"I have to work harder to find my groove without that missing part," the actress said. "It keeps me more engaged. I'm more engaged this season than I have been in a long time - for the fans. I want to make sure the quality stays good and they're there for us. I want to be there for them."
Pompeo also thinks giving her character Meredith new romantic prospects is refreshing.
"We're moving toward Meredith dating again, so everyone has to get ready for it. I'm very happy and excited with the way this is unfolding," the actress told Cosmopolitan about Meredith being back on the dating scene. "It's exciting for Meredith, and it's some happiness, some light. I hope we get to keep going down that path."
