"Criminal Minds" executive producer Erica Messer recently sat down to discuss her plans for season 12 and hinted Frances Fisher's character Antonia Slade could return if the show is renewed for next year.
In the "Criminal Minds" season 11 finale, Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner was framed by Antonia's son Asher in an attempt to keep him from stopping a prison break.
Even though Hotch managed to convince the Department of Justice to let him stop a bomb threat, the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) discovered other serial killers escaped from prison and 13 inmates are now on the loose.
Messer told TV Guide that she is a big fan of Fisher and would love to have her reprise her role of Antonia if "Criminal Minds" is renewed for season 12.
"I love Frances so much, she's so great," she said. "We're talking about whether or not Antonia escaped or if she is someone the team would go back to and revisit in prison? But I thought she had such a great rapport with everyone on the team. It was so cool to watch."
The "Criminal Minds" showrunner revealed there are no plans to have any of the other BAU teammates to be targeted by serial killers. Instead, the team is going to have to struggle with the challenges of being in the job for 12 years.
"Hotch's own words being used against him is a road we won't go down again," Messer explained. "There are still other big plans for season 12 that will be really interesting for our heroes to play, such as the challenges of being in the job for 12 years and things that happen in life that lead you down paths you never thought would come your way."
Messer added that even though she has ideas for season 12, she has not received word from CBS regarding the show's future.
"They will let us know right before upfronts, before they announce it to everybody," she said. "We will get the courtesy heads-up. There are discussions being had that are above my pay grade, so I don't know what we'll hear, but I can tell you creatively we're all excited for season 12. We're certainly not running out of stories. We're just waiting patiently."
Cinema Blend pointed out that "Criminal Minds" has a good chance of being renewed since it garnered decent ratings and even performed better than its spinoff series "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders."
