Hot, sticky weather can be perfect for experimenting with summery styles, but the humid temperatures can easily turn a fresh head of curls into a frizzy disaster. And straight-haired ladies aren’t exempt. In addition to battling the elements, a poorly thought out beauty routine could leave the smoothest of strands looking frazzled. You might not even realize that you’re making some of the most common mistakes. And you’re not alone. These are beauty bloopers that many women (including us) make every single day.

That’s why we turned to Tim Rogers, creative director of Living Proof, to pinpoint every faux pas that could intensify frizz. The celebrity hairstylist has worked his magic on big names like Adele and Blake Lively, so he also knows the solutions and techniques that will help you reverse your beauty blunders. And just so you know: There’s nothing wrong with frizz, but if you don’t want it, keep reading for the most common mistakes to avoid.

1. You’re rinsing your hair with water that isn’t the right temperature.
It might sound like a minor adjustment, but choosing cold or hot water can make all of the difference. So which temperature is best for keeping frizz at bay? “A cold rinse closes the cuticle of your hair,” Rogers tells SELF. “The flatter the cuticle lays, the smoother each strand will be.” Once you shampoo your hair with lukewarm water, wash your conditioner out with frigid rinse.

2. You’re not using the attachments on your blowdryer.
“Always make sure to use a nozzle on your blowdryer,” says Rogers. The attachments will direct heat to one specific spot of hair, creating a frizz-free finish. A narrow nozzle is perfect for straight textures. And if you have curly hair, add a diffuser to define your wave pattern.

3. You’re using the wrong brush.
“I always recommend using a boar bristle brush for the smoothest blowouts,” says Rogers. Even if you’re pulling your hair back into a ponytail a Mason Pearson ($105, nordstrom.com) brush will give your updo the smoothest results.

4. You’re drying with a towel.
Vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel might sound like a great way to wring out extra water, but the friction of a towel can intensify frizz. Rogers says, “Blot with a towel as opposed to rubbing, which can raise the cuticle.” If you really want to be cautious, swap the harsh fabric for a soft T-shirt or a microfiber towel like Devacurl DevaTowel ($12, devacurl.com).

5. You’re not tying your hair up before bedtime.
Tossing and turning on cotton pillowcases can be just as bad as a vigorous towel rub. Before catching some z’s you should make sure your strands are protected. “I like a topknot for bedtime,” says Roger. You’ll wake up with smooth strands if you avoid using an elastic. Roger says, “Twist hair into topknot and use bobby pins to secure, so it doesn’t dent your hair.” You can also use a silk pillowcase to reduce friction. Try SHHH Silk Pillowcase Set ($129, shhhsilk.com).

6. You’re not protecting your hair against UV damage.
You’ve mastered putting on sunscreen everyday, but don’t forget to protect your pretty locks. A formula that protects against UV damage and fights humidity is perfect to keep on hand. Rogers is a fan of the Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield ($22, livingproof.com). It tames flyaways without leaving a greasy residue.

7. You’re not paying attention to the ingredients in your products.
If you’re using hairspray to hold back frizz, think again. The first ingredient on most of these products is water. And when it comes to frizz, water is not your friend. “Also, avoid any product with a high alcohol content,” says Rogers. “This will have a drying effect on hair, which creates a frizzier, rougher result.”

8. You’re prepping for your blowout the wrong way.
Thick, curly textures can skip wringing the water out after washing their hair. “No pre-drying is necessary if this is your hair type,” says Rogers. “For fine, frizzy hair, pre-dry by gently stretching the roots and mid-lengths with a flat Denman brush ($13, sallybeauty.com) as blow-dry prep to create smoothness and volume.”
