HBO
Winter may have finally arrived in the Game of Thrones universe, but it looks like we'll have to wait until next summer to learn the fates of our favorite Westerosians. Yes, HBO has officially confirmed that GoT will not be back for it's seventh season until summer 2017.
This is a big departure from the show's usual format of premiering new seasons in the spring. The reason for the later-than-usual release? Winter, of course. Since the long-awaited winter season has finally arrived on the show, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reportedly decided to wait until it cools off IRL before they begin production. In the past, the show typically began filming in July.
But, wait, there's more: HBO also revealed that the season will only consist of a mere seven episodes. Normally, seasons are made up of 10 glorious hours. The bright side? With fewer episodes to produce, the showrunners can spend even more time making sure the episodes that do air are even more epic. Right?
HBO also added that Game of Thrones' season 7 will be shot in Northern Ireland, Spain, and Iceland. The last time Iceland was used as a location on the show was when Jon Snow ventured north of the Wall, so this means we can definitely expect some ultra chilly scenes next season. And though there was some speculation that the Brexit might jeopardize GoT's ability to film in Northern Ireland, it seems those rumors can finally be put to rest.
So, while we're thrilled to have a confirmed timeline for when we can expect to return to Westeros, this next year of waiting will surely be dark and full of terrors.
While you wait for season 7, watch what happens when you wear Game of Thrones clothing in real life:
