Why Kate Middleton Might Not Be in Pippa’s Wedding—and Your Sister Doesn't Need to Be in Yours

Who can forget when Pippa Middleton stood by her sister Kate's side as she officially became a royal princess? Pippa and her asset-hugging white Alexander McQueen gown looked so stunning while fluffing Kate's train that some even argued she was stealing the spotlight from her big sis. (As if there was such a thing—the girl was literally becoming a princess.) And now, five years later, Kate might not return the matron-of-honor favor as Pippa sets out to marry James Matthews—for fear of the very same thing.

According to People, the Duchess of Cambridge is "absolutely delighted" at the news of her sister's engagement, but now faces a royal conundrum: Overshadowing Pippa on her own big day. "Kate would upstage her sister," veteran royals author Judy Wade told People. "It's a tricky situation for Pippa. She would want her sister by her side, as who else would she trust to make things go well? But if your sister is a future queen, she is going to upstage the bride and draw attention. Kate would want to be in the background as much as possible."

Though most brides-to-be don't have to worry about having a royal hoopla at their wedding, not having your sister as your MOH is actually a fairly common bridal dilemma. There are many reasons why you might want to choose someone else to fill the maid-of-honor shoes: a large age gap, not having a close relationship, or just simply having a closer relationship with your BFF. But whatever the reason may be—royal or not—it's OK to make that call. Biology doesn't need to guarantee an automatic bid to the MOH role. If it feels right to pick someone who is not your sister, go ahead and do it. (Our own Kim Fusaro did.) Explain your reasoning to your sister(s), and she is sure to understand. (She might even be relieved.) Plus, a word to the wise: You're never going to make everyone happy in your wedding planning, but the two people who should be happy are the bride and groom.
