If you ask anyone on the set of "House of Cards," having Robin Wright as a director is a dream. Everybody loves and respects the actress-turned-director, including season four's primary director of photography, Pete Konczal.
"Robin is so smart," he told Decider. "It's so great with her since she comes from such a strong acting background. First, she looks for where these character are coming from. What's most important for her in the scene is where the actors are going, what's emotionally driving them."
What Konczal loves about Wright is how she is "digging in" with the stars such as Kevin Spacey (Frank Underwood), Michael Kelly (Doug Stamper), Neve Campbell (Leann Harvey) and Ellen Burstyn (Elizabeth Hale).
"Some directors will come in and say, 'I think these shots are cool and I want the camera here and here.' What she'll try to work out ahead of time is where the actors are going to be emotionally," he explained. "Robin and I will always say to each other when we're getting into the coverage, 'Whose scene is it? Is it Francis' scene? Is it Claire's? Is it Claire's mom's scene?' And that will determine where we place the camera."
Burstyn earlier told Vulture that even though Wright's character Claire Underwood is mean and manipulative, Wright is anything but the two. She also gushed about her on-screen daughter's directing skill.
"I've never had the experience of acting and directing, so it was wonderful to watch Robin going in and out of character, from behind the camera to in front of it. She's very good and the crew just loves her. They're so happy when she's directing. She's such an interesting woman - very smart but also has Claire's reserve. But she's not mean," Burstyn laughingly said.
