Jenji Kohan took Piper Kerman's prison memoir and turned it into the now popular Netflix series "Orange is the New Black."

While Kerman said that Kohan made the series into her own, she appreciates the fact that some important themes still remain in the series.

"The show is of course fictional in many ways. It is an adaptation of a true story. I always say Jenji Kohan, the show's creator, takes the book, puts it in a blender, and puts a lot of other ingredients in there, and presses liquify," Kerman told the Calgary Herald.

"It's always fascinating to see characters, situations, conflicts that are in fact drawn from the book that have been taken, changed and adapted in very, very creative ways," she continued. "But the things that are important to me, most important to me, are that the themes from the book around race and class and gender and power and friendship and empathy, those themes are front and centre in every single episode of the show."

Kerman said that she wrote her memoir because the United States is the most incarcerated nation in the world, and she wants people to understand the humanity of the people who are unfortunate enough to land in jail.

She suspects that people responded well to the series because prison life is "very intentionally hidden away from public view," so people are curious to get a glimpse of how life is in prison.

"I also think that everyone has something they've done that they regret. It may not have been a crime, they may not have broken the law, but we all have things we've done that we wish we could take back. And the questions about the consequences of our actions and whether they're fair, whether they're just, all of those things are dealt with in the show and the book," she said.

Earlier, Kerman told ABC Australia that prison survival is difficult, and the only way people can come out of it with their humanity intact is to have a sense of humor.

"Orange is the New Black" season 4 will return to Netflix on Friday, June 17.
