"House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey does not like what he is seeing now in the 2016 presidential elections. Still, the actor remains hopeful that America will select the best candidate in the end.

When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he would call the campaign period "astonishing," Spacey said no since he has already seen the antics of Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump done by previous candidates.

"There are many parallels that we could make to the 1968 race - George Wallace ran a very similar kind of campaign," Spacey said. "He did exactly the same sorts of things: attacked journalists, attacked integrity of other candidates, used racism, insulted people, there were fights at his rallies."

"You sort of go, 'Oh yeah, we've seen this before,'" he laughingly added.

Despite the pitiful state of the campaign period, Spacey is certain that the right candidate will still win.

"The good news about our country," said Spacey, is no matter how crazy it gets and no matter how much fun we have and how insane it looks, we generally get it right in the end. We generally figure it out. I'm very hopeful."

Earlier, Spacey told The Evening Standard that even though "House of Cards" is a political drama, there is still a fine line between the story told in the show and the things that are happening in real life.

"It's sort of silly to compare the two because they're both a little bit unpredictable and audiences have no idea where we're going to go and what we're going to do. And that's, I think, part of the enjoyment that an audience has - they don't really know," he said.

The fourth season of "House of Cards" has Underwood dealing with his split from wife Claire (Robin Wright) as well as his presidential campaign "FU2016."

The first episode of "House of Cards" season 4 already aired on March 4 on Netflix.
