Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle) has swayed from being good and bad ever since season 1 of "Once Upon A Time." He proved in season 5A that he has what it takes to become a hero, but he was forced to take on the powers of the Dark One once again for season 5B.
When show creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz were asked by IGN if it's possible that Rumple had learned a thing or two from his previous mistakes, they answered yes.
"He has learned something," Kitsis said. "I think that if fans are like, 'Oh, are they going to do the same thing again?' - absolutely not. He's learned a lot."
The upcoming episodes of "Once Upon A Time" will delve into Belle's backstory, and the two teased that Belle's past will play a significant role in her future with Rumple.
"I will say that it does parallel the present day story, and it does inform it in a very direct way," Horowitz said. "Without giving away too much, I think we can say that it was fun for us to explore a period in Belle's life that we hadn't explored yet, which was before she met Rumple, before we saw them meet in 'Skin Deep.' That's an area of her life that was a lot of fun to bring to life."
Meanwhile, Kitsis told E! Online that fans should never give up believing that Rumple and Belle will have their happily ever after.
"At the core of the beauty and the beast story, there is hope and there is love," he said. "I think that's always going to be there with the two of them, no matter how rocky and difficult things get. Yeah, they get tested, but I think we're going to see them both grow in different ways, and whether that means it'll be easy or hard - you're just going to have to watch to find out."
"Once Upon a Time" airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
