Even before she landed the role of Storm in Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse," Alexandra Shipp is already a huge fan of Halle Berry's portrayal of the mutant and desperately wanted to meet the actress.
However, the meeting never took place and Shipp was unable to get the pointers she wanted from Berry. So to prepare for her role, Shipp relied on research.
"My Storm in particular is...she's the past derivative of Halle's Storm. This Storm is a little bit different because you're meeting her in Cairo. You're seeing kind of a little bit of where she comes from. You're seeing all the pain that she's gone through," Shipp shared with Collider.
The actress added that Storm had a rocky start because her parents died in a plane crash and she became an orphan when she was only five years old.
"It's like, she's kind of just all really messed up and the only mutants that she knows are bad mutants. The only mutants that she knows are the mutants who use their powers for stealing, or protecting thugs or whatever," said Shipp.
For Storm, it was all about survival. When she meets Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), she is fooled into a sense of belongingness. Thinking that Apocalypse is her family and she can trust him, Storm forges an alliance with him.
Shipp said that her involvement with the horsemen is similar to someone joining a cult since "it's just pure love."
"I don't necessarily see her as a bad person, or as a bad mutant. I don't see her as a villain. She doesn't know that she's a villain. That's just all she's ever known, is just bad," she said.
Meanwhile, Singer explained during an interview with Screen Rant that the main goal of Apocalypse is really to save the world. Unfortunately, his desired end does not justify his means.
"He believes with his heart that order is the only thing that's going to save humanity, and he will provide that order at any cost," the director explained.
"And for a person who begins as a unifier and then grows in power - What's the old expression about power? Power does what? And what does absolute power do? Things just never go right, so that civilization goes down and he starts a fresh one," he added.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" will make its way to cinemas on May 27.
