"Jane the Virgin" star Ivonne Coll initially had doubts that her character Abuela would resonate well with fans, given the fact that the only language she knows how to speak is Spanish.
"I didn't understand at the beginning the dimensions of the character and what it represents and the importance of that character socially speaking and politically speaking right now in our country here in the United States of North America," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
But Coll was happy to be wrong because fans of The CW show simply loved her character. She also appreciates how Abuela represents the foreigners living in the United States and the fears and struggles they all have to live with.
"I think I reflect, through my character, through Jennie's [Snyder Urman] work, a very, very big population here in the United States. People who contribute, people who work," Coll said. "The audience has embraced it and they appreciate that she's speaking Spanish. I was very adamant about that but it turned out so good. I am so honored."
Meanwhile, Coll's co-star Gina Rodriguez is trying to empower the Latina community by launching a social media campaign called #Movement Mondays.
The campaign celebrates the many abilities of members of the Latino community and helps promote diversity in Hollywood.
"It's me doing it to uplift and highlight and empower other Latinos," Rodriguez told ET Online. "To send the message that there's a lot of wonderful and positive things going on in our community - that's what we should focus on."
"I think that the more that I do this, the more information and education will be given out [about] our power, and what we can do as a community when we untie together and start using our power for good. Obviously, I always think that's the best way to use it," she continued.
"Jane the Virgin" season 2 airs every Monday on The CW.
