"Recovery Road" star Jessica Sula has shared why she thinks there should be an open conversation about addiction and how being on the show has helped her become more understanding of people who have an addiction.
In an interview with Channel Guide Magazine, the actress said that she hoped people would understand what her character was going through and be open about it because a lot of people go through it.
"[They] don't realize their drug abuse is turning into a drug addiction," Sula said. "And it's not a bad thing to be open and honest about where you are in your life, and how you're feeling."
The actress added: "Addiction is a disease, and you can seek help."
Sula also shared some of the preparations she underwent in order to portray her character as believable as possible.

"I actually tried to volunteer at a rehab but I was not allowed," the actress told E! News. "They would never do that. I tried to write a couple of emails but understandably, you can't work with the people because they're going through rehab and I'm not a professional."
Sula said that she did, however, attend an Al-Anon meeting, where she got an idea of addiction and rehabilitation from the perspective of family members who have other family members who struggle with substance abuse.
Sula's character has gone from being in denial to fully aware of her addiction. In the first season finale, Maddie has finally come to terms with her alcoholism and appeared to be ready for full recovery. The series' renewal is still up in the air, though, so there's no guarantee that fans of the show will continue to see Maddie's progress.
Fans are still hopeful that "Recovery Road" will still get picked up, and a petition to ask Freeform to renew it has already been set up.
